Course Description

Getting Free From Whiteness is an embodiment group for white folks to bridge the gap between theory and practice in this era of racial reckoning.

Rooted in a heart-centered approach, this course is designed to challenge rigid binaries, polarization, and exclusion. We’ll endeavor to adopt a wider and more inclusive view of humanity, and our place in it.

These times compel us to move beyond intellectual understanding– reading books is not enough.

Racial division can be defined as a disease of separation– it disconnects us, severs us from each other. This is an opportunity to begin to recapture humanity from the grips of this division. We’ll explore the deep-seated, often invisible ways whiteness operates in our lives.

Given the severity of the problem and the chaos of our times, we’re called to rely on sources of support that are bigger than us.

In a world marked by separation, fear, and anger, we’ll focus on cultivating community, creativity, and wonder. Through mindfulness and embodiment practices, we’ll create a space for deeper self-awareness and connection.

While we grapple with the limitations of our current reality, we must also summon the courage to build a more healed and humane world.

  • Build small communities of connection and care.
  • Practice embodiment, relationality, and non-dual awareness.
  • Cultivate emotional resilience and compassion, particularly in the face of difficult feelings like vulnerability, shame, and despair.
  • Understand whiteness as an energetic force rooted in disconnection and dehumanization.
  • Question the presuppositions that form the basis of divisive thinking (i.e. individualism over collectivism, disconnection from nature (anthropocentrism), competition over collaboration, and a deep fear of vulnerability).
  • Challenge rigid binaries and polarization, softening either/or thinking.
  • Approach resistance, defensiveness, and discomfort with curiosity and kindness.
  • Adopt a more expansive, inclusive, and loving view of the world and each other
  • Six live online small group sessions (class size limited).
  • We’ll meet two Saturdays a month starting May 10th, 2025 from 12-2:30 pm EST (9-11:30 am PST).
  • Each class will include embodiment and mindfulness practices, reflective exercises, guided visualizations, journaling and compassionate listening. There will be occasional brief lectures when introducing a new topic.
  • Community building and enrichment activities between sessions will give participants the opportunity to practice empathy and connection. There will also be one-on-one sharing and discussion.
  • This interactive course will be held on Zoom. Members will be expected to participate with cameras on.

Note: This course is a prerequisite for Part 2, where we’ll delve deeper into the themes of anger, shame, and forgiveness.

  • Those committed to personal growth and transformation and who are ready to take a closer look at whiteness.
  • Spiritual seekers who wish to deepen their understanding of whiteness and racial division.
  • Social justice advocates and activists seeking a community of support and a chance to expand their capacity as coaches, trainers or leaders.
  • Anyone ready to engage more deeply with one of the greatest problems of the modern era.
